Guidelines for Nomination and Selection

 

 The Franklyn Conroy Williams Holmes Scholar Award was established in 2005 in honor of Dr. Williams, first President of the Holmes Scholars Council and University of Central Florida Holmes Scholar who precipitously left this life on April 1, 2004. The award honors the memory of a young man who touched the lives of many, and demonstrated excellence in leadership scholarship, collaboration, and mentoring.

 

The award is given on an annual basis to the Holmes Scholar who demonstrates the qualities that Franklyn exemplified. The following are guidelines for nomination and selection.

 

Eligibility

Holmes Scholars in good standing are eligible for nomination by their university. Letters of nomination must include evidence of how the Scholar demonstrates the following qualifications.

 

Qualifications

Demonstration of Excellence – The Scholar demonstrates the ability to perform at high standards of excellence in their academic work as well as in their interactions with others.

Leadership – The Scholar demonstrates leadership skills in their work at the university, in the community, and in organizations in which they participate.

Scholarship – The Scholar demonstrates exemplary scholarship in university coursework and research.

Collaboration – The Scholar collaborates with other academicians and professionals to continue to build their knowledge base and to contribute to the development of innovative educational practices.

Mentoring – The Scholar takes time to seek out and work with faculty mentors as well as to mentor other students, colleagues, and Holmes Scholars.

Nominations can be made by the Holmes Scholar Coordinator, the Scholar Advisor, and/or the Dean of the partnership institution, and must include the following:

  1. A curriculum vitae for the nominee
  2. A letter of nomination, which addresses the nominee’s professional goals, commitment to excellence, to education practice and improvement, and research agenda.
  3. One other letter of recommendation highlighting the scholars accomplishments

 

2008 Award Selection

Nominations for the 2008 Award should be submitted electronically to Dr. Max Freund at mfreund @ gwu.edu with copy to the Holmes Scholar office mail at Holmes-Scholars @aacte.org, by January 7, 2008. A selection committee consisting of the Holmes Scholars Council President, a Holmes Alumni, and a Holmes Board Member will review nominations and submittal of credentials from Scholars. The final selection will be made by the committee and announced at the annual Holmes Scholars National Conference.
