MEMORANDUM-TIME SENSITIVE!
To: Holmes Partnership Deans From: Maxine B Freund, EdD Re: The Holmes Scholars Summer Institute
March 20th, 2006 I am delighted to announce plans for the 2006 Holmes Scholars Summer Institute. We are pleased that the interest of the Holmes Partnership Deans and Scholars has assured the Holmes Partnership Board the importance of the Summer Institute for Scholar development. The Board has therefore approved its support for the 2006 Institute. New and continuing Scholar’s interest ensures the Institute participants both a robust cohort and a rich week in Washington set to begin July 9th and continue through July 14th, 2006. As we are underway with our planning, we want to make certain that the Deans and Scholars are fully aware of the particular opportunities that the Institute will offer. This year the Summer Institute is focused on the extremely important topic, "From Local Action to Global Impact: Governance, Advocacy, and Leadership". Using the Washington, “inside the beltway experience,” the Scholars will have opportunities to participate in relevant activities, meet with educational leaders and policy and research specialists with expertise that offers examination of the 2006 topic. Attendance at the Institute incorporates the notion of full-week participation. The week is structured to include all participants for the entire institute; this prevents us from accommodating those who cannot attend the entire Institute (Sunday July 9th, 2006 late afternoon through Friday, July 14th, 2006 ending around 5:00 p.m.). In addition, due to the significant level of Scholar interest and limited space, first priority* will be given to Doctoral Scholars who have not yet attended a Summer Institute in Washington. ** In order to undertake careful planning, we ask each of the Scholars wishing to participate in the Institute to fill out the Institute Information Form attached to this email. It is critical that it is returned to me no later than April 17th. The form should be sent to Dr. Maxine B. Freund, George Washington University, 2134 G Street NW, #424. Washington, D.C. 20052. As well, Scholars should confirm their attendance by including a $75.00 "Confirmation Fee" check along with the Information Form. The check, made out to the George Washington University, will be returned to the Scholar to be destroyed upon arrival in D.C for the Institute. If, however, a committed participant does not attend the Institute, the check will be cashed. With regard to hotel housing, we are currently working at negotiating two hotel options. The first, at the One Washington Circle Hotel, is set at a daily rate of $179.00 + tax. The One Washington Circle Hotel is located close to The George Washington University campus. Reservations are required by June 9th. If you are interested in staying at the hotel, please call 202-872-1680 or 1-800-424-9671 and request a reservation as part of the following block: “GW-The Holmes Scholars Summer Institute” arriving on Sunday, July 9th. A block of 15 suites have been reserved. The hotel was originally an apartment building, thus the rooms are very spacious and can easily accommodate two Scholars. The second negotiation with the State Plaza Hotel has yielded a daily rate of $153.00 + tax. The hotel is located on The George Washington University campus and within two blocks of the One Washington Circle Hotel. Reservations are required by June 9th. If you are interested in staying at the hotel, please call 202-861-8200 or 1-800-424-2859 and request a reservation as part of the following block: “Group #8559” arriving on Sunday, July 9th. A block of 10 suites have been reserved. The Graduate School of Education and Human Development at GWU is delighted be a part of the Holmes Scholars Program and to once again have the privilege of hosting the cohort of Scholars representing Holmes Partnership member Institutions committed to the Summer Institute. The planning is well underway, already incorporating important meetings with groups representing educational interests, membership and advocacy efforts. The GWU team of Dean Mary Hatwood Futrell, Dr. Maxine Freund, and our long-time friend and colleague from IEL, Dr. Michael Usdan, is again leading our efforts. ____________________________________________________________________ **Institute spaces will be held for the Holmes Scholars Officers as the Summer Institute serves as a site for Scholar Program development, regional reporting and planning for national conference presentations. |
